Performance Rankings
The fastest USB4 external SSDs ranked by read/write speed. Compare 40Gbps interface performance and real-world throughput.
USB4 delivers up to 40 Gbps of bandwidth, rivaling Thunderbolt 4 for external storage. These drives push the limits of what's possible over a single USB-C cable, delivering extreme throughput for professional workflows.

Speed comparison for fastest usb4 external drives. Corsair EX400U USB4 achieves 4.0 GB/s sequential reads, with 0 other drives within striking distance.
Raw sequential numbers tell only part of the story. The Corsair EX400U USB4 delivers 4.0 GB/s reads over USB4, but sustained throughput under heavy loads depends on thermal design and controller firmware. Per corroborated third-party benchmarks, it maintains 3.6 GB/s+ during extended writes.
At these speeds, thermal management becomes a bottleneck. Sustained transfers can push controller temperatures past 70°C, triggering throttling that drops throughput by 30-40%. Look for drives with aluminum enclosures or thermal pads.
To hit the advertised speeds of USB4, your host must support 40 Gbps over USB-C. Many 2021-2023 laptops ship with 10 Gbps or 20 Gbps ports only — the Corsair EX400U USB4 is a good example of the performance at stake.
At capacities above 2 TB, the price premium for SSD storage over HDDs narrows the value gap. For active project storage, the speed advantage justifies the cost. For cold backups, a HDD still offers lower per-terabyte pricing.
| Drive | Read Speed | Write Speed | Interface |
|---|---|---|---|
| Corsair EX400U USB4 | 4.0 GB/s read | 3.6 GB/s write | USB4 |
| Corsair EX400U 1TB | 3.3 GB/s read | 3.0 GB/s write | USB4 |
| SSK PM510 USB4 1TB | 3.2 GB/s read | 2.8 GB/s write | USB4 |
| Sabrent Rocket Nano XTRM-Q | 3.0 GB/s read | 2.8 GB/s write | USB4 |
| OWC Envoy Pro FX 1TB | 2.8 GB/s read | 2.8 GB/s write | Thunderbolt 3 |
Without a 40 Gbps host port you will not hit rated speeds. Check your laptop or desktop specs before buying — many USB-C ports top out at 10 or 20 Gbps.
